Each extinguisher has a numerical rating as a guide for the amount of fire that the fire extinguisher can actually handle. The higher the number, the more power it has to fight a fire. - Class A = for fires involving paper, plastics, wood are burning. (green triangle symbol)
- Class B = for fires involving liquids like gasoline, kerosene, oil, and grease. (red square symbol)
- Class C = for fires involving electrical equipment, appliances, wiring, etc. (blue circle symbol)
- Class D = for fires involving chemicals like magnesium, titanium, etc. (yellow decagon symbol)
- Class K = for fires involving cooking oils, transfat oils, etc. (black hexagon symbol)
